SOME ODDS & ENDS FROM THE USA

YOU MIGHT FIND THIS OF INTEREST. IT SHOWS THE USA SIDE OF THINGS

MANY OF THE SCHOOL BUS ACCIDENTS ARE CAUSED BY DRIVER ERROR,

YES SOMETIMES DRINK, HARD TO ACCEPT & HARDER TO BELIEVE, MOST ARE BECAUSE OTHER  VEHICLES RUN INTO THEM.

THEY ARE VERY BIG & BRIGHT YELLOW, YET OTHER DRIVERS MISS  SEEING THEM,

I COULD FILL PAGES WITH ACCIDENTS IN THE USA, THEY HAPPEN ON A DAILY BASIS, BUT VERY FEW PUPILS ARE KILLED OR INJURED- BECAUSE THE BUS IS THE RIGHT  FOR THE JOB

BUT READ ON

Every year, there are at least 8.8 billion school bus trips taking students on a trip in the USA.

There are more than 440,000 school buses on the road, transporting over 24 million kids to school and home and other related activities. In the course of any given day, there are bound to be accidents involving school buses. In fact, the accident statistics show that roughly 26 kids die every year in school bus accidents, OR are hurt while getting off the bus or hurt as passengers.

Even though school bus accident rates are not that high, crashes like this are extremely upsetting for everyone.

The latest news in the industry is the possible advent of seat belts. School buses have been in operation for ages without seat belts, and in addition, the design of buses has not changed since 1977.

School buses are designed in every aspect for student safety in accidents.

The padding on the seats are designed to cushion a blow from sudden stop accidents.

The high back seats are designed to keep children in the seat area should an accident occur.

The height and frame of the bus are designed to keep the major portion of a collision impact away from the students and to protect the large gas tank from impact to prevent fire.

There are many escape areas to exit the bus from in various types of occurrences.

The drivers are specially trained and hold special licenses and endorsements

to provide the best drivers possible for safety.

Everything about school buses is geared towards the safety of the students and practice and training are constants.

School buses are purchased or leased by some school districts, while other

school districts engage the service of school bus contractors to perform this function.
Approximately 40% of school districts in the United States use contractors
The color, which has come to be frequently called simply "school bus yellow",
was selected because black lettering on that specific hue was easiest to see in the semi-darkness of early morning and late afternoon.

The School Bus Information Council has provided statistics on school bus safety revealing that school bus accidents are much less likely to occur than any other type of transportation.
For every 100 million miles travelled passenger car travel results in 0.94 deaths.
Air travel results in 0.06 deaths. Passenger trains, even though there are very few still used, results in 0.04 deaths. School buses, however, only has 0.01 deaths per 100 million miles..
Once again we see the mistruths given by D of T & other organisations in the UK, who continue to claim that in North America etc, school children's deaths are common place.
