Tighter parking rules to make school gates safer
Every child starting school next week in Northern Ireland is to be given a high-visibility vest as part of a new road safety campaign.

Our MPs & MSPs need to take note of this, now!!
It seems perverse to say the least. Children in Northern Ireland will be so much safer leaving or boarding a school bus than others within the UK
WHY ?
WHY are all school buses in Northern Ireland to be given the right to fit flashing lights to each side of the current school bus sign. This WILL really ensure every driver saw them & to aware it’s a hazard area
WHY are all school pupils though out the UK not treated the same, & given the same protection?
WHY would anyone even begin to expect a pupil to be better protected in one area of the UK than another?
WHY would parents accept this?
Is it thought of it wont happen to my child, we pray not, but accidents do happen & they have to happen to some ones child?
This is criminal negligence, this is a total lack of responsibility by those who Govern us, those in Departments stuck in the middle of London, who look at things with a big City bias, what other reason can they give?
Can you think of a reason why school pupils should not have the same protection though out the UK.
Its akin to seeing workers on sites, in factories, shop, health boards in every part of industry operating with different safety rules.
Does it happen, of course not? Every worker has the same level of protection & legally at that.
That is of course unless you happen to travel on a school bus, unless you are at an age that needs even more protection than an adult.
Look at what the Northern Ireland Government is doing to protect school pupils, then ask yourselves why your child should be treated any different

These powers were given to the Northern Ireland Assembly i understand in 2007, why not though out the UK? what is the differance between Scotland & Wales having the same powers? & safe safety features We will be asking this when we next meet at Edinburgh in October, i will be asking for The Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh to apply for the same powers. No doubt the Dept of Transport will refuse,but how can they? ..........................................
IF WITH IN THE UK OVER THE LAST 30 YEARS , 21 - PLANES CARRYING 500 PASSENGERS HAD CRASHED CAUSING THE DEATH OR INJURY OF 105, 000 PEOPLE OR
IF IN SCOTLAND, 4 HAD CRASHED CAUSING 21.OO0 ODD deaths OR injuries.
There would be an out roar. Wouldn’t there JUST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would this of been allowed to continue, of course not, the public would not stand for it; politicians would of ensured things changed, AS WOULD THE AIRLINES.
The point of fact is, this is true on a comparison basis
Since 1981 UK wide 105,329 school pupils have been killed, injured or seriously injured leaving the school bus.
These figures only cover up to 2006 & only up to the age of 15
Yet our MPs & the Dept of Transport stand by year on year telling us casualty figures are dropping.
They have already worked out we have reached a new level of safety years in front!!
The problem with this is, one accident sadly means this figure cant be achieved & they are playing with figures.
As in last year when we sadly saw 3 pupils killed & many injured on school buses.

Road deaths in Grampian have risen in the first six months of the year compared with 2009
The government states they have already reached the target re safety/accidents, we are told they will be down for 2010, as i point out time & time again, it cant happen a year in front, its impossbile to forecast, yet they do.
Once again proved wrong!
It makes figures look good, the problem being, how much is the truth, or in fact are figures massaged!!

THE AVERAGE COST OF A FATAL ACCIDENT, WORKED OUT BY GOVERMENT IS NOW £1.5 MILLION.
The figure is staggering, that does not take into account the injured & those who need 24 care for the rest of their lives

WE WOULD LIKE TO POINT THIS OUT TO EVERYONE
WE would addThe children had left the bus stop, none of the children had walked out from behind the bus,nor in front of it , nor in front of a any car.
Robyn was well over the road when she was hit !
Alexander was at the verge on his side of the road, a foot fall from safety!
Erin was virtually at the kerb on her side of the road!
We would also add, none were wearing iPod's or using a mobile phone, as many would like to point out they were, especially the drivers!!
They were leaving school transport, as they were taught to do,as all parents teach their child to do, observing road safety .
None were larking, about,there is no accounting for the careless driver who does not pay attention.
Yes we aware that some children do lark about at the bus stop, [ they always have, its nothing new] drivers however should be prepared for this event

Strathclyde Public Transport unit tells me
SPT act as agents for 11 councils for the purpose of procuring and managing their school transport requirements.
They state “ Whilst we would support your assertion that use of the signs on other journeys dilutes other road users association with the transport of school children, neither SPT nor the councils can take action against a transport operator when not undertaking a contracted service”
YES YOU CAN, THROUGH YOUR SCHOOL CONTRACT, AS YOU CAN INSIT HAZARDS LIGHTS ETC ARE USED
You are at odds it seems with the Dept of transport & Scottish Government
ITS ACTUALLY YOU THAT THAT REVIEWS PROCEDURES
So in fact its quite possible that these 11 councils are being misled, we do appreciate what you have done so far.

This also gives time for everyone involved in school bus safety to fully discuss this matter..
Not every child in Scotland has the same measure of safety, & we cannot stand by as this goes on.

I was also quoted in the Press that I supported the new See Me initiative, I do , as the rest of the families do.
But only on the condition its available to every child, we cannot support, nor will in fact support any safety measures that protect some children, but not them all.
I also spoke out for all the families involved, not for myself
This of course affects every school bus in Scotland
School safety needs to be inclusive, not reserved for certain bus routes, accidents do not recognise post codes.
