An open letter
Gordon brown spoke on Radio saying “I think we have got to look at the best safety measures for children when there on school buses”
What a laugh, sadly
Who have been in power these last years, i think 13, how many school children have been killed & seriously injured in that time.
Gordon, & in fact all Westminster MPS have had years to improve school bus safety, we always hear after the event things will change, but rarely do. School bus safety has hardly changed in 30 years.
Since 1981 21,800 children have been killed or injured in the UK in connection with school bus transportation, usually whilst leaving the bus
Department of Transport response “Remedies exist, local authorise can implement safety measures”
But many don’t,nor are they forced to, the law on seat belts is a mess, older buses are used to get round supplying school buses with seat belts.
It easy to see what pressure from some quarters can do as regards changing the law.
Mephedrone the plant foods drug, after a few deaths & some are wondering if they are even caused by this drug, & the law has changed.
No smoking law, mobile phone law, etc etc, all passed, in some cases it appears with obscene haste.
School bus seat belts, safer school buses, a law ensuring the school bus safety sign is only used on buses transporting pupils.
Of course not we & ask again, WHY
What about the safety of those on service buses used as school bus, any safety laws for school buses wont apply to them, where is inclusive safety for all school pupils.
Some school pupils have a safer journey to school than others, WHY?
All pupils surely have the same right to safe transport as all adults do.
Why cant Westminster sort this mess out, it has been discussed within the House of Commons since 1981, with only a few MPS advocating change.
Malcolm Bruce MP had it raised & discussed recently, for that we thank him for again bringing this serious issue before the House.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM, AMEND LAWS OR BRING OUT NEW ONES
